Rex and Saskia are enjoying a biking holiday in France when, stopping at a gas station, Saskia disappears. Directed by George Sluizer (as was the 1993 remake) and based on Tim Krabbé's novel The Golden Egg, this Dutch/French import from 1988 has similar pacing to many of the foreign films I have seen.

The Vanishing. It would spoil the film’s magic to delve too deep into its ending, but suffice it to say that The Vanishing wants us to believe that curiosity works the same way. It is a thriller about knowledge - about what the characters know about the disappearance, and what they know about themselves. Director: George Sluizer. The Vanishing remake is not a bad film, but it is a frustrating one. ‘The Vanishing’ starts with a mysterious disappearance and features breathtaking twists, and its influence can be found in the work of Denis Villeneuve and recent hits like ‘Searching’ Confounded, Rex searches everywhere, but to no avail. It starts out very slow, almost boring, then it slowly picks up the pace until it avalanches into an ending that will leave you feeling like you just got run over by a big rig. Having been familiar with the source material, it is difficult to recommend this picture. Synopsis Who Has Seen This Woman?
